Communion with Jesus
Jesus is the source of life.
Jesus is the one through whom all things were created in the beginning, and the one who will raise the dead and make all things new.
And at church Jesus gives himself to us. In his words (written down in Holy Scripture and preached from the pulpit), in baptism, in the forgiveness of sins, and in the Lord’s Supper, Jesus promises that we belong to him and he belongs to us.
And through Jesus’ promises, we have life that can’t be taken away by sickness, failure or death. We have life that cannot be improved upon by money, success, or status. Through his promises, we have life that doesn’t come and go, but is everlasting.
What Is Church For?
We have a different purpose than most churches. Most churches aim to help us do better at daily living.
They offer advice on how to be a better parent or how to manage your finances or how to deal with stress.
We aim to give something that surpasses daily life: Jesus.
For if we have Jesus, then we have life, whether we’re successful or failures, rich or poor, healthy or weak.
Church fills us up, and when we go back to our daily lives, we can give it our all knowing that daily life doesn’t finally make us or break us.
As Jesus says, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger and whoever believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35).
Together in Christ
We don’t offer programs but people. At church Jesus gives us two gifts at once.
In the Lord’s Supper, Jesus gives us his body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins.
And he gives us the body of Christ, that is, each other. Because we are tied to Jesus, we are tied to one another.
We belong to a people who have one hope, one faith, one baptism, one Lord.
We spend time together at church so that we can listen to one another, rejoice with one another, bear one another’s burdens, live together and die together.
We don’t just come to church for us. We come to church for each other, so that we may be built up into him who is our head: Jesus.
